Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) holds on for dear life in the latest poster for Sony’s upcoming video game adaptation, Uncharted. The Spider-Man: No Way Home star is here to steal treasure and your heart as he steps into the beloved role of adventurer Nathan Drake in this big-screen live-action outing, starring alongside Mark Wahlberg as his rival-turned-mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan.
The newly released promo, which was released courtesy of the official Uncharted Twitter account, teases what’s sure to be one of the most exciting action sequences in Uncharted, which will find Drake thrown from an in-flight airplane. In a sequence of events surprisingly similar to the video game source material, Drake uses his agility and quick thinking to climb up a variety of debris as it falls from the plane, with our intrepid hero acting fast to save himself from a vertical doom.
Based on one of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed video game series of all time, the long-awaited Uncharted movie will take Nathan Drake back to his youth, acting as a prequel to the video game series with which it shares its name. Uncharted tells the story of Nathan Drake and his very first adventure with Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as the quick-witted, wise-cracking, eventually mustachioed Sully, Uncharted will show audiences and fans how Nathan Drake became a treasure hunter as he unravels one of history’s greatest mysteries and treasures while tracking clues that may lead to Drake’s long-lost brother.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Zombieland: Double Tap) from a screenplay by Rafe Lee Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway, Uncharted stars Sophia Ali as Chloe Frazer, a fellow fortune hunter and associate of Sully’s who is Nate’s love interest; Tati Gabrielle as Braddock, a mercenary working against Nate and Sully; Pilou Asbæk and YouTube personality ElrubiusOMG in undisclosed roles; and Antonio Banderas as Moncada, a ruthless treasure hunter and the film’s antagonist alongside Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as the bickering central duo.
Approaching a video game movie is never an easy task (as is proven by the fact that most of them are, to put it warmly, less than well-received), with director Ruben Fleischer hoping to appeal to both fans of the franchise and newcomers alike. Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann has revealed Fleischer’s all-encompassing aim, revealing that the filmmaker hopes to appeal to “both hardcore fans of the game and those who are not yet familiar with the franchise.” From Druckmann’s perspective, Fleischer has achieved what he wanted to with Uncharted, as he believes “that both will be equally entertained by this incredibly fun and action-packed film.”
Following a whole host of delays thanks to both backstage drama and the ongoing global situation, Uncharted is scheduled to be theatrically released by Sony Pictures Releasing in the United Kingdom on February 11, 2022, and then in the United States on February 18. Here’s hoping that the globe-trotting action-adventure will have been worth the wait.
