As the hype train for Sony’s upcoming video adaptation, Uncharted, is finally ramping up, with several new images from the movie, as well as a photo of central duo Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, tease the adventure to come. Released by Total Film, the images show Holland as Nathan Drake, an aspiring young explorer who embarks on a globe-trotting escapade alongside Wahlberg’s Victor “Sully” Sullivan and Sophia Taylor Ali as Chloe Frazer, a fellow fortune hunter, and Nate’s love interest.
Based on one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, Uncharted tells the story of Nathan Drake as he teams up with rival-turned-partner Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as the quick-witted, wise-cracking Sully, Uncharted will introduce audiences to an early version of the beloved video game characters as they become the treasure hunter fans know and love while unraveling one of history’s greatest mysteries and treasures while also tracking clues that may lead to Nate’s long-lost brother. Zombieland: Double Tap and Venom director Ruben Fleischer has been tasked with bringing the critically acclaimed Naughty Dog video game to live-action, with the likes of Tati Gabrielle and Antonio Banderas making up the rest of the supporting cast.
The new images give us a good look at the main players in this epic action-adventure, offering our best look yet at Sophia Taylor Ali’s character, Chloe Frazer, with her and Holland’s Nathan Drake exploring a dark cave and looking every bit the Indiana Jones-style adventurers that the movie will no doubt hope to create. As it happens, Tom Holland has previously compared Uncharted to the likes of famous cinematic icons Indiana Jones and James Bond saying, “I think the easiest way to describe the film without belittling it in any way is like if Indiana Jones and James Bond had had a baby, it would be Nathan Drake. That is the way I keep describing the film.”
Not content with simply transforming Tom Holland into a James Bond-type, Uncharted will also give audiences a different, bulkier version of the actor, who was inspired (and intimidated) by his co-star, Mark Wahlberg into putting on some muscle mass. “When we went to set for the first time, I saw Mark Wahlberg [who plays mentor figure Sully], and Mark is massive. He is a unit,” Holland said of meeting his co-star. Thankfully, he was able to hit the gym during a temporary pause in filming, with Holland explaining, “We went home for five months, all I did was eat and train, eat and train, eat and train – to put a bit of timber on, to make me look not like a child next to Mark.”
Efforts to bring Uncharted to the big screen have been fraught with difficulty, with the Sony project facing several setbacks. Originally set for release way back in June 2016, Uncharted was pushed to June 2017, then December 2020, then to March 2021, before being delayed again until October 2021. The movie was then moved up to July 16, 2021, before settling on a release date of February 11, 2022. Uncharted has since been pushed back another week, with the movie now scheduled to be theatrically released by Sony Pictures Releasing in the United States on February 18, 2022.
