Warning: Spoilers for Thor: Love and Thunder
Upon the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, new concept art of actor Russell Crowe’s original role in the film are revealed online. Thor: Love and Thunder sees the return of Chris Hemsworth in his long-running titular role as the Norse god of thunder. Rejoining him is Natalie Portman as his ex-girlfriend Dr. Jane Foster who ends up wielding Thor’s powers, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Taika Waititi as the voice of Korg. The sequel also introduces new characters such as Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher and Crowe’s Zeus.
Zeus had a limited role in Thor: Love and Thunder, first appearing when Thor, Valkyrie, Jane, and Korg seek out Zeus’s help to build an army to fight Gorr. Thinks don’t go according to plan and Thor ends up throwing Zeus’ lightning bold through his chest, seemingly killing him. Zeus didn’t have a big impact on the story aside from the team stealing his lightning bolt, but the film’s post-credits scene made it clear Zeus would get revenge on Thor by sending his son Hercules after him. This has big implications for future Thor storylines, but it almost didn’t happen.
Concept artist Miles Teves, who worked on Thor: Love and Thunder, took to his Instagram account to reveal that Crowe was originally considered to play not a god, but Satan himself. Teves posted two pencil drawings of the Oscar-winning actor as the Devil, the first being on a fiery throne with horns and hooves and holding a severed human foot, and the second with a more humorous and colorful take of him relaxing on a couch, still with that same leg. While Teves jokingly speculates that Marvel rejected the idea of Crowe playing the Devil due to his illustrations, the work has gotten plenty of positive feedback from fans online, with many commenting on what the film could have been with this inclusion. Thor: Love and Thunder continued the new direction that Waititi first brought to the Thor franchise in Thor: Ragnarok, as the latest film has a lighter and somewhat sillier tone. The depiction of Crowe’s Zeus as psychopathic but humorous is no exception, and it’s fair to speculate if he would have gone the same way if playing Satan.
Since its release, Thor: Love & Thunder has received mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which continues a new trend of MCU films performing lower than average since Phase 4 began. A lot of it could be pinned on Waititi’s style, relying too much on jokes and funny moments rather than driving the story forward. Even then, the idea of introducing Satan in the MCU would be way too wild to comprehend. Maybe there is a possibility for Thor to face Satan in the future, but it could be saved for an Avengers-level threat instead. But with Crowe already as Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder, it’s almost certain that he wouldn’t be playing the Devil anymore.
