A new Thor: Love and Thunder cast listing might reveal a Black Panther connection. Chris Hemsworth’s return as the god of thunder comes as part of Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok followup, and it is shaping up to be quite an impactful film for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is already confirmed that Thor 4 includes the return of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) as she becomes Mighty Thor, but everyone from Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) to the Guardians of the Galaxy is set to appear too.
The fourth Thor movie is set to debut in theaters later this year, as Thor goes to war with Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale). Plot details beyond this feud and the origin of Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor remain a mystery, but it is expected that Thor: Love and Thunder will be packed with surprises. For the MCU, that has come to mean plenty of connections to other past and upcoming projects. It is known that Thor 4 helps set up Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in some form, but it otherwise doesn’t have a confirmed path to influence other MCU Phase 4 properties.
There is now evidence to suggest Thor: Love and Thunder holds a connection to the Black Panther mythology. This comes from Australian actress Akosia Sabet, who updated her IMDb and Showcast profiles (as spotted by Cosmic Circus). Sabet is now listed as playing Bastet, the Egyptian cat god who is directly connected to Black Panther and Wakanda in Marvel’s lore. While casting websites like IMDb are not always reliable, Showcast‘s app is more secure and should’ve been updated by Sabet or someone associated with her career. As a result, it seems she’s filmed an appearance as Bast for Thor: Love and Thunder, although the size of her role is unknown.
The MCU has already confirmed Bast exists, as Black Panther‘s prologue teased the Panther Goddess. Bast is responsible for guiding Bashenga to the heart-shaped herb that transformed him into the first Black Panther. Bast is also one of the gods Wakandans encounter in the afterlife, which T’Challa first mentioned in Captain America: Civil War. A physical manifestation of Bast has not been featured to this point, but it seems Thor: Love and Thunder could change that with Akosia Sabet playing the Panther Goddess.
Although Bast’s role in Thor 4 is not confirmed, it does make some sense. It is quite clear the movie is diving deeper into the mythology of different gods with Gorr’s inclusion. The film is already set to feature Greek gods with Russell Crowe’s Zeus, while Asgardians are often compared to gods in the MCU. A tease of Wakanda’s mythology would be a pleasant surprise, even if it might spell trouble for Bast. Gorr the God Butcher’s title will have to be earned throughout the film, so Thor 4 could show him kill Bastet. Even if that happens, it sets up a potential connection between Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, where Bast could be seen again.
