John Krasinki and Steve Carell will soon be sharing the screen once again, but it won’t be at the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. The two former stars of The Office will be part of the cast of If, a family movie in development at Paramount. As reported by Deadline, Krasinski will also be writing and directing the feature in addition to starring. The ensemble cast also includes Alan Kim, Louis Gossett Jr., Cailey Fleming, Fiona Shaw, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Ryan Reynolds.
Full plot details haven’t been divulged for If. Reportedly, the story is based on an original idea from Krasinski about a child’s journey to rediscover their imagination. No information has been revealed about Krasinski’s character or who anyone else will be playing in the film. Krasinski has taken to Instagram to praise the cast members that have been announced so far.
ln the caption, Krasinski says, “Ah, what if one day I could assemble my dream cast? What… IF.”
Additionally, Krasinski will produce If through his Sunday Night banner with partners Allyson Seeger and Andrew Form. Reynolds will also produce via Maximum Effort with George Dewey serving as an executive producer.
Steve Carell and John Krasinski Haven’t Shared the Screen Since The Office
We know from their time together on The Office that Steve Carell and John Krasinski work well together. From 2005-2011, Carell had played the “World’s Greatest Boss,” Michael Scott, with Krasinski also starring as Jim Halpert. Though Carell left the series in 2011, he returned in 2013 for the series finale, giving Carell and Krasinski a chance to reunite on screen once again. Their casting in If will be the first time they’ve acted together since, though there have been The Office reunions where they’ve reminisced about working on the show with other cast members.
Both actors have been doing very well with their respective careers, but it’s not impossible we could see them one day reprise their characters from The Office once again. Series creator Greg Daniels has spoken about how making new episodes wouldn’t work too well with most of the original characters having moved on from Dunder Mifflin. However, he teased the possibility of making some “lost episodes” that would bring back the classic cast for some new scenes.
“I think it’s probably more likely now that the show is on Peacock, but no plans right now, certainly,” Daniels told E! News in 2021. “People are more open to it now, it seems like. The issue is, what’s left to be said about the characters? A lot of them aren’t working there anymore. Jim and Pam live in Texas now, so does Darryl… But it would be fun to find some lost episodes and just shoot them as if they were back in 2010 or something.”
If with John Krasinski and Steve Carell is scheduled to be released by Paramount Pictures on Nov. 17, 2023. Classic episodes of The Office are streaming on Peacock with new footage included with the “Superfan” episodes exclusive to the streaming service.
