New images from The Batman offer a great look at Colin Farrell’s stunning transformation as Penguin, including his comic-accurate costume. While the MCU dominated the box office in 2021, WB is looking compete in 2022 with the Matt Reeves-directed DC movie. Starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, the film will also see Zoe Kravitz in the role of Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Jim Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Unlike more recent DC/WB movies, The Batman is a standalone story and is not connected to the continuity established in other DCEU films.
No Batman movie is complete without its villains and for this take on the character, Pattinson’s hero will be going head-to-head with The Riddler, played by Paul Dano. This version of the character is expected to be much scarier than past live-action Riddlers, with Dano pulling inspiration from real-life serial killers for his performance. Also in the mix is Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin, who will be an up-and-coming mob boss looking to make his mark on Gotham City’s crime scene. While Danny Devito’s iconic portrayal of Penguin in Batman Returns looms large, Farrell’s remarkable transformation promises an exciting and comic-accurate take on the character.
WB has released a batch of new images from The Batman, offering new looks at several characters, including Colin Farrell’s Penguin. In the images (below), Farrell is barely recognizable under his Penguin makeup. It’s no where near as dramatic as Devito’s from the Tim Burton movie, but it’s an impressive transformation all the same. When combined with the dapper suit Farrell is wearing, the whole look is strikingly accurate to how Penguin has been depicted in Batman comics across the years.
It’s still unknown exactly how Farrell’s Penguin will factor into The Batman. Farrell has revealed his character only has roughly nine minutes of screentime, which certainly isn’t much for a film that’s likely going to have at least a two hour runtime, if not longer. Still, Farrell’s Penguin could make a real impression even with a limited role. Already, WB has greenlit an HBO Max spinoff show for Farrell’s Penguin, suggesting the studio is very confidant in his take on the iconic Batman villain.
Though Farrell’s Penguin may not have a whole lot to do in Matt Reeves’ movie, his dramatic transformation into the character has been a talking point since he appeared in the first The Batman trailer. These latest images offer us the best look yet as his appearance, and it’s a great adaptation of the character from the comics. While not as flamboyant as Devito or even Burgess Meredith’s Penguin from the 1960s Batman show, it’s a true to the character interpretation that fits with the more realistic aesthetic of Reeves’ film. With the makeup and costume, Farrell certainly looks the part of a crime lord who’s looking to make his move – and ice anyone who dares call him Penguin to his face.
