Could The Batman still work if it had a much more colorful version of the Riddler than the one played by Paul Dano? A new fan-edited trailer provides somewhat of an answer to that question. In the upcoming film, Dano makes his debut as the Riddler, portraying the character as a masked murderer who wears black and very dark green colors. It’s an interesting depiction, but as you can see by watching the fan-edited trailer below by filmmaker Matthew Highton, putting Jim Carrey’s Riddler into the film instead seems to be very intriguing in its own way.
Carrey’s Riddler comes from the 1995 film Batman Forever. Directed by Joel Schumacher, the film features Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne, taking over the Batsuit from Michael Keaton, with Tommy Lee Jones also starring as the villain Two-Face. The depiction of the Riddler by Carrey is among the actor’s most memorable roles, as it was certainly a very unique portrayal. Last year, Carrey told ComicBook.com how he could envision the classic supervillain teaming up with Dr. Robotnik, the villain Carrey plays in the Sonic the Hedgehog films.
“Well, I think I think they’re both basically spinning. They’re both spinning in the tree of knowledge. They’re leaping from branch to branch and falling occasionally,” Carrey said. “I wouldn’t put one against the other. I think they’d be a great team. But you know, it’s like Robotnik and every super-villain basically comes from a place of neglect with a feeling of absolute worthlessness that manifests itself in magnificent creations that are designed to control the world, put their brand on everybody, and maybe even get inside your bloodstream with some nanotechnology occasionally.”
The New Riddler in The Batman Looks Like the Zodiac Killer
In The Batman, Paul Dano will be presenting what could be the most sinister version of the Riddler yet. As can be seen in the trailers, the film picks up with the Riddler terrorizing Gotham City. The supervillain has been methodically murdering people and leaving behind clues at the crime scenes for Batman to find. Perhaps the killer is so confident in his riddles that he wants to see if he can outsmart the world’s greatest detective. He gets a lot of comparison to the Zodiac Killer, though Dano says there’s more to him than that.
“I liked how both grounded and big this film is at the same time. So there are some grounding forces like the Zodiac Killer, right?” Dano previously said, per Empire. “But it’s still The Batman, and for me it’s much bigger, so it was important to let my imagination react to the script, rather than strictly basing it on a serial killer.”
Robert Pattinson stars opposite Paul Dano with the cast of The Batman also including Zoe Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, John Turturro, and Peter Sarsgaard. Matt Reeves directs using a screenplay co-written with Peter Craig. The Batman is scheduled to finally be released in movie theaters on March 4, 2022. It will be available for streaming on HBO Max exactly 45 days later.
