A clip from The Batman shows the Riddler attacking a funeral and delivering a letter to the Caped Crusader in a suspenseful new video. Matt Reeves’ upcoming reboot will explore the early years of Robert Pattinson’s Batman, similar to Frank Miller’s seminal comic Batman: Year One. Following the titlular hero as he earns the mantle of “World’s Greatest Detective,” The Batman will pit Bruce Wayne against iconic villains from his rogues’ gallery, including John Turturro’s Carmine Falcone, Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman/Selina Kyle, and Colin Farrell’s Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot. The Batman’s main antagonist will be Paul Dano’s Edward Naston/The Riddler (Paul Dano).
In the gritty and grounded world of The Batman, the Riddler is a serial killer who prowls Gotham City, wrapping duct tape around his victims’ heads and leaving clues for Batman. As seen in the film’s trailers, one of Riddler’s victims is mayor Don Mitchell Jr., who looks to be killed in his home and whose body found with “No More Lies” written on his face. The resulting funeral will be seen in The Batman and offer the Riddler another opportunity to wreak havoc on the people of Gotham.
On Twitter, Mediafilm recently shared a new clip from The Batman that sees the Riddler attack Mitchell’s funeral. In the video, Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon is discusses missing D.A. Gil Colson with a fellow officer before Bruce Wayne sees the Riddler. Then, a car crashes through the church carrying none other than Colson himself, as well as a message for Batman. Check it out below:
Historically, the Riddler’s love for puzzles inevitably leads to the biggest mystery of all: the Dark Knight’s secret identity. Like many of The Batman’s previous teases, the above clip implies that Dano’s Riddler already knows Bruce Wayne is Batman, or at least finds out early on in the film. There have also been hints the movie will explore the Wayne family’s involvement in Gotham’s corruption, which the Riddler wants to pull out root and stem. If Pattinson’s Batman is to defeat the Riddler, he’s going to have to reconcile his family’s past.
The Riddler hasn’t appeared in a live-action film since Jim Carrey played him in Batman Forever (1995). While that movie was a decidedly campy affair, The Batman looks to be striking a new tone with something much darker. The villain’s penchant for riddles will no doubt challenge Bruce as a crime fighter, detective, and bring him to some uncomfortable conclusions in The Batman. On top of its impressive visuals, brutal action, pulse-pounding score, and stellar cast, that is what makes The Batman one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
