Warning: This article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The ending of the latest MCU installment, Spider-Man: No Way Home, sabotaged the biggest selling point of Sony’s Morbius. No Way Home blew the doors of the multiverse wide open by bringing in both the heroes and villains of past Spider-Man franchises, as well as Tom Hardy’s Venom in the film’s mid-credits scene. While Tom Holland’s MCU threequel celebrated Spider-Man’s 20-year history on the big screen, it inadvertently damaged the next Spidey-related release, Morbius, in the process.
The promotional campaign for the next film in Sony’s Spider-Man villains’ universe constantly featured Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes, better known as The Vulture, who first appeared in Tom Holland’s first solo MCU film, Spider-Man: Homecoming. This, along with the various landmarks from different franchises that were spotted in Morbius’ trailers, helped create some buzz around the Sony film. Fans could not pinpoint which universe Morbius takes place in, due to the conflicting details in the trailer, but Vulture’s inclusion was by far the film’s biggest talking point.
Sony’s entire villains’ universe was a hard sell from the start, since the purpose of a Spider-Man-related franchise that does not include Spider-Man himself was, and remains, lost on audiences. Morbius’ link to the MCU, established by Toomes’ presence, garnered excitement from the general public for an otherwise uninteresting-looking feature. However, the ending of No Way Home indicated that there might be nothing to get excited about since the Vulture seen in the Morbius trailer cannot be the same one MCU viewers are familiar with.
Audiences assumed that Keaton’s appearance in Morbius will be justified by No Way Home’s multiversal shenanigans, which did not happen. No Way Home’s final moments saw all the villains and heroes get sent back to their respective universes, indicating that the MCU’s Vulture stayed put. This confirms that the version of Toomes that will appear in Morbius is not the same one that appeared in Homecoming, but most likely a Vulture variant. Therefore, Morbius has no links to the MCU or any other Spider-Man franchise with the exception of Venom, invalidating the film’s potential biggest draw for audiences.
Even with the success of the Venom movies, audiences are still somewhat skeptical about Sony’s Spider-Man universe villain films, with many arguing that they only serve to waste Spidey’s villains. The Venom series has proved to be popular, but that’s mainly due to the popularity of both the symbiote and Tom Hardy. Morbius will have a much steeper hill to climb, especially now that its biggest appeal has been nullified by Spider-Man: No Way Home’s ending. Whether Jared Leto’s star power alone can fill theaters remains to be seen when Morbius releases this April.
