Robert Downey Jr.’s acclaimed sleuth is back in a fan-made trailer for Sherlock Holmes 3. When last seen in the sequel A Game of Shadows, Sherlock Holmes had supposedly plummeted to his death whilst defeating arch-nemesis Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris). However, just before the credits ran, it was revealed that – as in the book – Holmes found a way to escape the dreaded Swiss waterfall. Despite this, it seemed he decided not to disclose his valiant survival to anyone, leaving his family, friends, and colleagues to believe that he was truly gone for good.
Although Warner Bros.’ action-packed reboot of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous creation has received positive reception since its first outing with Sherlock Holmes in 2009, its future as a series since the second film has been less concrete. Various script amendments and changes of director have affected development on the third installment. Despite the fact Downey Jr. is now free of his Marvel commitments and Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher is confirmed to helm Sherlock Holmes 3 after Guy Ritchie’s work on the first two movies, there’s still no word on when a release date or even filming schedule will be forthcoming. In October 2020, Fletcher stated the project is on hold.
Naturally, however, this delay hasn’t extinguished the excitement audiences still harbor for the upcoming film. Speculation still rules supreme regarding what enemies Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson (Jude Law) will be facing. Binge Watch This has uploaded a fan-made trailer onto YouTube, bringing some of these speculations to life. Using footage from the previous two installments, as well as from other films such as Sherlockian parody Holmes and Watson, the trailer explores the possibility of the Victorian heroes protecting the Queen from an assassination plot.

The trailer’s proposal of the pair facing off against regicidal maniacs is one that is certainly in keeping with the series’ tradition of having high-stakes, nation-collapsing problems for the duo to solve. However, while those who enjoy watching Sherlock Holmes at work may have just passed the decade mark of waiting for the next film’s release, they have hardly been starved of Sherlock-related content. Since the release of A Game of Shadows, the amount of Holmes-related media has grown exponentially. From the BBC’s Sherlock and CBS’s Elementary to Netflix’s Enola Holmes and The Irregulars, it’s hard to escape the plethora of Holmes adaptations currently on offer. So when Sherlock Holmes 3 does finally release, it will have to contend with more competition than it had in 2011.
That being said, the release of this fan-made trailer is a strong indication that enthusiasm for Downey Jr./Law’s interpretation of the characters is no less ardent than it was a decade ago. It seems that the huge boom in Holmes’ media presence over the last ten years has increased excitement for the franchise’s future as opposed to hampered it. With Downey Jr’s intention to have a Marvel-esque cinematic universe for his Sherlock Holmes, it would appear that audiences have much to look forward to. Either way, while details on Sherlock Holmes 3 remain as enigmatic as ever, Warner Bros. can perhaps be reassured that their Conan Doyle adaptations have not lost any of the adoration that made them so successful.
