More new footage from the set of the Secret Invasion Disney+ series has shown the return of Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, who will be back alongside Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury to take on a new threat to the world. As well as new images of Smulders having bloody make-up applied to her face for one scene, video footage has shown Maria Hill meeting up with the unknown character being played by Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke. These are the latest set images to be uploaded online, with pictures of a bearded Jackson also revealed in the last few days from the current shoot in Leeds, U.K.
Smulders has been a long-standing member of the Marvel family, first appearing as Maria Hill in The Avengers a decade ago and since being a part of numerous movies as well as the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series. In the post-credit scene of Avengers: Infinity War, Hill and Fury were seen being dusted by Thanos’ snap, and after both returning in the final scene of Avengers: Endgame, the pair was last seen in Spider-Man: Far From Home, although it turned out that both Hill and Fury were actual Skrulls in disguise.
This latest footage sets up an intriguing meeting between Hill and Clarke’s character on a street corner, which sees them greet each other and then walk into a building together. From this, it is still hard to work out whether Clarke is on the side of the heroes or villains, and with anyone potentially being a Skrull in disguise in the series, there could be plenty of surprises to come with all the new characters being introduced in the show. Secret Invasion Continues Storylines Set Up in Captain Marvel, WandaVision and Spider-Man: Far From Home
Back in 2019, Captain Marvel introduced the shape-shifting race of Skrulls into the MCU, setting them up as the villains of the movie only to flip them into an oppressed, misunderstood race just after the halfway point. Ben Mendelsohn played lead Skrull Talos in the film, and he will be reprising the role in Secret Invasion, which will see him reuniting on Earth with Nick Fury. A Skrull character also appeared at the end of WandaVision to recruit Monica Rambeau for Captain Marvel. While it is not thought that Rambeau or Carol Danvers will be making an appearance in this series, you can never say never with Marvel.
Marvel has used their Disney+ output to be very experimental with the characters and storylines of the MCU, but from what is known about Secret Invasion, it looks like we are heading back into regular Marvel action territory with a story of alien infiltration of Earth and all the action that brings with it. It was previously thought that the series would be premiering sometime in the summer, but that now seems to have changed, and with the series still filming, it is more likely that Secret Invasion will not arrive until the end of the year.
