If a sequel to The Batman comes to fruition, Robert Pattinson knows who he would like to face off against. The actor revealed his hope to fight the DC Comics villain group, the Court of Owls.
Batman is set to make his cinematic return in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film. Instead of retelling the superhero’s iconic origin story, the project will take a look at Bruce Wayne during his second year of fighting crime. Unlike previous live-action interpretations, The Batman will be a detective story. Pattinson’s dark knight will encounter multiple villains, including Zoe Kravitz’s burglar Catwoman, Collin Ferrell’s rising crime boss Penguin, and John Tutero’s established mob boss Carmine Falcone. However, the main antagonist of the motion picture will reportedly be Paul Dano’s Riddler. Dano’s portrayal is said to be inspired by the real-life Zodiac Killer.
While speaking to Den of Geek, Pattinson talked about possible villains he wishes to fight. Batman is widely regarded as having the best villains of all of comic books, so there are plenty of options. One of the possibilities the actor mentioned was the holiday-inspired killer Calendar Man. The character was originally known for being campy, before his reimagining in the highly acclaimed graphic novel The Long Halloween. Another choice was the group known as the Court of Owls. When discussing the villainous group, Pattinson said, “I’d love to do something like Court of Owls. There are elements of The Batman which are kind of horror and I think it really feels quite new for Batman.”
I’d love to do something like Court of Owls.
What is The Court of Owls?
The Court of Owls originally appeared in Scott Snyder’s acclaimed comic book run in DC’s New 52 reboot in 2011. They are a secret society comprised of many of Gotham’s wealthiest citizens. The group operated in the shadows of the city for centuries. When they revealed themselves to Batman, the organization almost pushed him to the brink of his sanity. The tv series Gotham featured the group’s first live-action appearance. They served as the main villains for much of the third season. Additionally, they are set to be the main antagonists of the upcoming Gotham Knights video game. Previously, there were rumors that the Court of Owls would show up in the first film of Reeves’ Batman franchise. However, Pattinson’s statements seem to hint that they would not show up until future installments.
The group could prove to be exciting foes for Batman to combat. The former’s pulling of strings would mean that they are a more intellectual adversary. Also, the undead assassins known as Talons that the Court employs could provide a more physical threat. Trailers for the first movie indicate the Dark Knight will learn more about his city’s corruption. A sequel including the Court of Owls would provide more information about the shadiness that occurs in Gotham. Many fans are hoping to see villains on the big screen they haven’t viewed before. With no previous live-action big-screen incarnations, Court of Owls could be some of the best villains to ever exist in a Batman film.
The Batman will arrive in theaters on March 4.
