Review: CLARA SOLA, When Quiet Desperation Explodes

What does it mean to leave a life of quiet desperation? The quote’s originator might have been referring to people’s values, but we could take our own interpretation, of how too many people are unable to find happiness and contentment. Much to do with the pressures of existence, increasing immesurably in recent years, but it can also come from family, tradition, and attending expectations. And sometimes, perhaps inevitably, that desperation will leak, or explode.

Clara Sola tells the story of just such an explosion. Costa Rican-Swedish director Nathalie Álvarez Mesén’s feature debut simmers with anger, longing, and lust; the story of a woman repressed her entire life by tradition, who discovers the pwoer that others thought to use for themselves, might be far more powerful in her own hands. But that power can make things worse before they are better.

When we first meet Clara (Wendy Chinchilla Araya), she is trying to get her horse Yuca to come back to her. Clara is stopped by a non-existent line, a purple ribbon tied to a postd beyond which she is not allowed to cross by herself. She is allowed to do very little by herself, even at 40 years old. Born with a severe curvature in her spine, Clara is said to have healing powers, and so her mother Fresia keeps her effectively locked away, physically and mentally – Clara only leaves the property with others, and lives with Fresia and her niece Maria (Ana Julia Porras Espinoza). But one day, Santiago (Daniel Castañeda Rincón) comes to look after Yuca, and Clara feels something she only vaguely understands, but soon overpowers her.

There is something fantastical in the woods, whether seeping into Clara or from her – or perhaps it is a circle. She has a connection to the earth, to animals, to insects that others do not, and cannot explain. And as much as her mother and Maria love her, they also exploit this gift, as a source of income. The mother will not allow Clara to have surgery that would help her back and her constant pain; everyone infantilizes her, so it’s impossible to know whether her seeming immaturity and inability to understand social cues comes from a developmental problem, or the way her growth has been stunted. Only Santiago treats her as a whole individual.

Likening her to the Virgin Mary becomes a curse; Clara is punished for pursuing her sexual pleasure, to ask for anything that might give her happiness, and so naturally her reaction is that of a angry child.  Her magic reveals itself in subtle ways, with changes in the colour of plants, literally breathing life back into the dead. We want to hold her, help her run away, and yet we are in more than a little awe of her growing power, that her desire drags out of her.

For her family, everything relates to the Virgin Mary, a religious idol that leaves no room for Clara to be her own person; perhaps Mary too longed to release some understandable anger in the face of a role thrust upon her against her will. Fresia rubs chillis on Clara’s hands when she catches her masturbating; Clara responds by stealing Maria’s quinciñera dress. Clara is not afraid to rasie the stakes when she realizes just how trapped she is in this broken, pained body, that her mother refuses to assist. And any little sympathy is perhaps blown into larger proportion than Clara should expect.

Chinchilla Araya is astonishing as Clara, never making her without sympathy, showing us the justification for her sullenness, her dangerous dreaming, the ignorance forced upon her. She knows that what is inside her is not the result of some singular god who expects conformity, but as she finds her longing and jealousy growing, she understands this is part of what the conformity has tried to repress, and what she and her nature, and this fantastical nature that connects her, is trying to bring out.

Like a slow, pained moan that slowly builds into a furious scream, Clara Sola is a remarkable feature debut from Álvarez Mesén, full of desire, anger, love, and magic, with a heroine you want to protect even as you are in slight fearful awe.

Clara Sola opens theatrically in New York on July 1st, and Los Angeles on July 8th.

What Prey Haters Fail to Grasp About the Original Predator Movie

It began when the first teaser trailer appeared for Prey, which highlighted the terrifying technological imbalance between Naru and her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers) and the Predator (Dane DiLiegro). In the original teaser, we see the pair hiding in tall grass while the latter draws a bowstring and arrow from his shoulder… and the Predator’s infamous three-pronged light that signifies death appears on Taabe’s head. By design, you are meant to experience a realization of dread by the contrast. However, many online influencers reacted with scorn at the very idea of a Predator movie focusing on Native American warriors taking on a pop culture icon from the Reagan Years… particularly since the main character among those warriors is a woman.

Based purely on the trailer, YouTubers were already reviewing Prey months ago with headlines like “How to Spoil a Good Idea,” and then lamenting that the fanbase “just wants a decent Predator movie instead of a fucking intersectional struggle session.” The same video, which we’re purposefully not linking to here, also snarks that unlike the muscular Arnold Schwarzenegger, Midthunder “has the size and build of a small child” and her facing off against the Predator will be “fucking ludicrous.”

Since the movie’s actual release, such criticism hasn’t gone away on social media apps like Twitter where memes have gone viral depicting images of the cast of Predator (1987) juxtaposed against Midthunder and text that reads, “A team of highly skilled badasses with years of experience had almost no chance versus a Predator. A girl with almost no experience beats a Predator alone.”

It is of course impossible to separate the misogyny and racist undertones of these “critiques” from any point they’re trying to make. A predisposed need to dismiss any film, particularly in genre and fanboy fare, as “ludicrous” or undeserving when it stars a woman is as common as mindless uses of the term “Mary Sue.” Writing off Prey because it stars a Comanche woman (who is played by a woman of Lakota, Nakoda, and Dakota heritage) as the ultimate survivor, as opposed to a 6’2” Austrian male bodybuilder, is the point.

Nonetheless, it’s still worth noting that such impotent attempts at fandom gatekeeping also fall limp because they reveal a complete and total misunderstanding of what director John McTiernan and screenwriters Jim and John Thomas were going for in the original 1987 picture. Yes, Predator had the most hyper-masculine cast in a decade where action movies were defined by big guns and bigger biceps—and the movie was mocking that image.

Generally recognized as one of the greatest action filmmakers of the last 40 years, McTiernan is still celebrated today for making one of the classic Schwarzenegger action movies in Predator, as well as more groundbreaking thrillers afterward like Die Hard (1988) and The Hunt for Red October (1990). But what do those latter two movies have in common? They’re intentional departures from the brawny, exaggerated masculinity of the previously most popular actioners of the 1980s. Even McTiernan’s other collaboration with Schwarzenegger, 1993’s Last Action Hero, is notable because it was such a satire and deconstruction of the star’s onscreen persona in the ‘80s.

New Trailer for Netflix’s ‘Do Revenge’ Promises Wicked Fun

A new trailer for the Netflix black comedy Do Revenge dropped on Tuesday, offering a further glimpse into the bubblegum, sugarcoated world of director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s latest endeavor. 

Do Revenge stars Riverdale’s Camila Mendes and Stranger Things’ Maya Hawke as two high school students who’ve had their social lives ruined by their respective loose-lipped exes. In an effort to exact their titular revenge, the pair decide to employ each other to inflict the punishments they’re hesitant to bestow upon their own tormentors. The premise evokes stories like Patricia Highsmith’s Strangers On A Train or the cult dark comedy film Heathers, while the trailer’s aesthetics call to mind recent movies like Promising Young Woman and Ingrid Goes West. 

Robinson is best known to date for co-writing Thor: Love and Thunder alongside Taika Waititi, writing and directing the Netflix film Someone Great, and co-penning the HBO Max film Unpregnant. On the television side, she notably created the darkly comedic series Sweet/ Vicious, which aired for one season on MTV. 

She spoke to THR in 2019 while making her first feature, Someone Great, about her prioritization of including as many women and people of color as possible in her creative team, saying: “It’s not just about hiring inclusively for the sake of hiring inclusively; It’s deeper than that. The best thing that you can do as a storyteller is bring as many people to the table as you can that are different than you because then you’re going to create something that is full of so much life. It’s going to elevate your project.”

Do Revenge also stars an ensemble cast of who’s-who teen TV heavyweights, including Sophie Turner, Rish Shah, Talia Ryder, Jonathan Daviss, Maia Reficco, Paris Berelc, and Alisha Boe. 

The film’s two stars have impressive titles coming up in their roster: Hawke will next be seen in Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro and Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, while Mendes’ upcoming slate includes Rudy Manusco’s Música and, additionally, American Sole, alongside Bad Bunny and O’Shea Jackson Jr.
