Things are beginning to come together for director Zack Snyder’s upcoming sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon. Set for release on Netflix, Zack Snyder himself has released several new stunning pieces of concept art for the movie, which teases the kind of scope that will be needed for the divisive filmmaker’s original idea, which he has likened to both Star Wars and the work of Akira Kurosawa.
Rebel Moon will tell the story of “a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Belisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.” The epic vision for Rebel Moon is clear from this concept art, with Zack Snyder reportedly hoping to spawn his own sci-fi saga in the vein of Star Wars. The beautiful landscapes continue in another glimpse, released by NetflixFilm.
Alongside this smorgasbord of concept art, the all-star cast of Rebel Moon has also now been announced. Joining The Mummy and Atomic Blonde star Sofia Boutella in the lead are the likes of Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Doona Bae, Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi and Sky Yang.
Rebel Moon is a Real Passion Project for Director Zack Snyder
The concept for Rebel Moon is something that Zack Snyder has wanted to make for some time, with the director envisioning crafting a new science-fiction franchise ala Star Wars long before Disney purchased the iconic property from LucasFilm. “We talked about it, but it never [happened]. I’ve been working on it away from the Star Wars universe, on my own, as a sci-fi thing… It’s still a sci-fi thing. It’s the same story,” Snyder said previously. “Now, I’m just going to let Star Wars be Star Wars. The 11-year-old me still wants to make that, and now, I know how to. So, maybe we’ll see that someday.”
Deciding to “let Star Wars be Star Wars,” Snyder will now lean more heavily into the work of director Akira Kurosawa which, of course, inspired George Lucas in the first place. “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure,” Snyder said of Rebel Moon. “My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out… I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing, and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”
Zack Snyder will produce Rebel Moon alongside his producing partner and wife Deborah Snyder, with the intention being that the movie will spawn a franchise all its own. Snyder has already set a precedent for this at Netflix, with his recent zombie-heist flick Army of the Dead leading to sequels, prequels, spinoffs, and animated shows.
While Netflix has not yet announced a release date for the movie, production on Rebel Moon is expected to begin this year.
