Neve Campbell says she improvised a line about having a gun in the new Scream film. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett helmed 2022’s unique take on Scream, which picks up 25 years after the murders in the original movie. As a new Ghostface begins a killing spree, Campbell’s Sidney Prescott is forced back to Woodsboro to uncover the truth. Campbell portrayed Sidney through the four previous Scream films, and she’s joined in the fifth installment by other franchise veterans, Courteney Cox and David Arquette.
Scream also introduces a new cast, including Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid, Jenna Ortega, Dylan Minnette, and Mikey Madison. The new film calls itself a “requel,” which is a reboot and a sequel. Using the concept of a “requel,” Scream introduces new rules the characters need to understand to survive. As the film becomes a meta-commentary on the nature of its own existence, it allows new and returning characters to face down the twisted plot that unfolds. Having been a part of the franchise since 1996, Campbell found her return to the role easy, slipping right back into character and even making script changes.
In an interview with Variety, Campbell was asked about a line in the new Scream where Sidney is asked if she owns a gun. Sidney replies, “I’m Sidney f**king Prescott. Of course I have a gun.” In response, Campbell said, “That was not in the script.” According to Campbell, the original script had Sidney reply by saying “Yes.” However, Campbell thought the response didn’t suit her character, so she improvised a more befitting one, which was included in the final film. Check out Campbell’s comments below:
“That was not in the script. The version that I had read, Dewey does ask, “Do you have a gun?” And I say, “Yes.” And then he carries on with something else. But I thought that’s not enough because, of course, she would have one. I remember writing that line.”
Actors regularly improvise lines, as they garner an understanding of their characters. Campbell’s improv in Scream is a crowd-pleaser that even made the trailer prior to release. The fifth Scream film opened on January 14, earning just over $30 million in its first weekend. Scream is also a hit with critics and audiences, many of whom hail it as the best since the original. While many wondered if another Scream film was necessary before its release, the evidence points toward the fresh new take breathing life into a franchise that had not released a movie since 2011.
As for Campbell, she has been working steadily in between Scream films. She had a run on Netflix’s House of Cards, she appeared opposite Dwayne Johnson in 2018’s Skyscraper, and can next be seen in The Lincoln Lawyer TV series. Whether or not Campbell will reprise the role of Sidney in future Scream installments remains to be seen. However, a Scream sequel seems likely given the success of the film.
