Mortal Kombat 2 is a go at New Line Cinema. Deadline reports that the rumored sequel is officially happening with the studio bringing on Jeremy Slater to write the screenplay. Slater served as the head writer of the upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight, though he’s also known for developing The Umbrella Academy for Netflix. He also created The Exorcist TV series and served as a writer on the films The Lazarus Effect, Fantastic Four, and the upcoming Thread, his directorial debut.
No other deals with cast and crew are locked in place at this point, but it would seem likely that several main cast members will return. The original movie, which was released in the midst of the pandemic in 2021, was led by Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Mehcad Brooks. While this update suggests that original writers Dave Callaham and Greg Russo are not returning, there’s a good chance Simon McQuoid will be back in the director’s chair, as he’s previously said that he’s up for doing more Mortal Kombat movies.
“Sequels are a bit tricky because you can’t totally ignore them, because that wouldn’t be a smart move, but none of us used the ‘s-word.’ We’d never talk about it in any depth whatsoever because we feel like we have to put all our energy into this film,” McQuoid told Variety in 2021. “That being said, if the fans want another one, that’s not for us to decide; that’s for the fans to decide. Then, we need a couple of joiner pieces that we know can lead us somewhere because there’s a treasure trove of stuff that’s just sitting there.”
Mortal Kombat 2 Will Bring in More Fan Favorites
Something that’s exciting about this news for fans of the video games is that the sequel will introduce other characters that didn’t appear in the first Mortal Kombat. One of the most obvious examples would be Johnny Cage, as the Hollywood star and master of the Shadow Kick has been a fan favorite ever since the original Mortal Kombat video game. McQuoid explained that Johnny was only omitted from the first film because he had too big of a personality but that he will be there in Mortal Kombat 2.
“The reason [Johnny Cage] is not in this original film is he’s such a giant personality that he almost has his own gravitational field,” McQuoid said. “The feeling was that he would throw it out of balance slightly. I get asked about Kitana just as much as Johnny Cage. There’s a lot of interesting characters, story and material to work with. So we haven’t really dug into it; we just know we’re very privileged that’s sitting there. If we do get to that, and I’m not saying we will, I’m just saying if — big if — then we’ll go down that path.”
At this point, there is no release date announced for Mortal Kombat 2 and it’s unclear when production might begin. You can watch the first movie streaming on HBO Max.
