Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan continues to play things somewhat coy when asked whether audiences will ever see his fan-favorite Marvel character, Killmonger, return to the fray. In an interview with MTV UK, the actor was asked whether Erik Killmonger, who has already made one comeback in animated form in the Disney+ series What If…?, will ever be seen again in the live-action MCU.
“I think it’s a character and a world that I love so much, who knows? But as we all know Marvel has their plans and their things, who knows how things are going to shake out.”
Thanks to the onslaught of rumors, misdirection, and out-and-out lies surrounding the recent Marvel outing Spider-Man: No Way Home, it has become more difficult than ever for fans not to wonder why actors would play things so coy when asked about potential roles and comebacks.
Erik “Killmonger” Stevens was a U.S. Navy SEAL in black ops who, during the events of Black Panther, seeks to overthrow his cousin T’Challa and assert his own rule of Wakanda, with his own opinion on how the technologically advanced nation should be run. Eventually taking over as Black Panther, Killmonger is seemingly killed by T’Challa come the movie’s end. So, with Michael B. Jordan clearly on board to return to the world of Marvel somewhere down the line, could audiences see Erik Killmonger somehow resurrected?
This is not even the first time that Jordan has danced around the question of a Killmonger revival. When asked back in May 2021 whether we would see the character in the upcoming Black Panther sequel, the actor replied; “I didn’t want to go with zero, you know what I mean? And it’s like, you know, never say never, you know, I can’t predict the future. So I mean, it’s Black Panther 2. The two, I just figured two would be like, two sounds okay, I guess… All I know is that they’re developing a script that, you know, is a reflection of a lot of circumstances and tragedy that we had to deal with this past year.”
Titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the follow-up to the 2018 Academy Award winner Black Panther, will continue to explore the incomparable world of Wakanda, and all the rich and varied characters introduced in the first movie. Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, who was behind the first Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will star several familiar faces from the first movie, including Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, and Dominique Thorne.
The sequel has the difficult task of continuing the story in the absence of Chadwick Boseman, who sadly passed away in 2020 after battling cancer. This has led many to wonder which character will take up the mantle of Black Panther, with some suggesting that a variant of Killmonger could be the right choice.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 11, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
