Music and acting legend Meat Loaf has died at the age of 74. Thanks to his unique blend of operatic goth-rock and pop stylings, the powerhouse performer has been a stalwart on both stage and screen, crafting a musical legacy that lasted over 40 years. The singer also led a successful acting career, most notably starring in musical comedy The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Meat Loaf, born Marvin Lee Aday, released his first album, Bat Out of Hell, back in 1977, and although the album would eventually be considered a rock classic, it initially received mixed reviews from critics. Despite an unsteady start to Meat Loaf’s professional music career, he quickly established himself as a household name, thanks to his dramatic and grandiose pop-rock melodies. Releasing a total of 12 studio albums, Meat Loaf proved himself an all-around star, his appearance as Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show kickstarting his acting career that saw him go on to appear in cult classics such as Fight Club.
But in sad news, a statement shared by the singer and actors family on his Facebook page confirms that Meat Loaf has passed away at the age of 74. The touching post confirmed that the rock star was “surrounded by his wife Deborah, daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends”.
