Unmask the truth with the latest poster for The Batman, which puts the spotlight on the stellar supporting cast as well as giving us another look at Robert Pattinson in the iconic cape and cowl ensemble. Released by the Warner Bros. India Twitter account, the poster puts the Bat amongst the rogues, with The Dark Knight flanked by the likes of The Riddler, The Penguin, and Catwoman.
As well as giving us another look at this gang of familiar DC heroes, villains, and antiheroes, the poster also shows off Pattinson as alter ego Bruce Wayne, who has been surrounded by one of The Riddler’s Zodiac Killer-style codes. The Batman is expected to tie in both Batman and Bruce Wayne with The Riddler’s evil scheme, with the supervillain seemingly knowing that the billionaire and The Dark Knight are one and the same.
While this latest poster looks a little more like what we have come to expect from superhero movie promos (most notably the floating heads), the intention for The Batman is to harken back to film noir motifs and themes. The movie will introduce audiences to an early version of The Batman, picking up with Bruce Wayne a mere two years into his habit of stalking the streets and striking fear into the hearts of criminals. These activities have led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City, where he works alongside a few trusted allies, such as his trusted butler Alfred and Officer James Gordon, the lone vigilante who has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
The Batman comes up against his greatest threat yet, when a killer targets Gotham’s elite leaving a trail of cryptic clues sending the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman, Oswald Cobblepot aka the Penguin, Carmine Falcone, and Edward Nashton aka the Riddler. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.
As well as film noir, director Matt Reeves has also taken inspiration from a rather unexpected source: the 1990s band Nirvana. “Early on, when I was writing, I started listening to Nirvana, and there was something about [Nevermind song] ‘Something in the Way’, which is in the first trailer, which is part of the voice of that character,” Reeves explained recently. “When I considered, ‘How do you do Bruce Wayne in a way that hasn’t been seen before?’ I started thinking, ‘What if some tragedy happened [ie: Wayne sees his parents murdered] and this guy becomes so reclusive, we don’t know what he’s doing? Is this guy some kind of wayward, reckless, drug addict?’ And the truth is that he is a kind of drug addict. His drug is his addiction to this drive for revenge. He’s like a Batman Kurt Cobain.”
The Batman is scheduled for release in the United States on March 4, 2022.
