The 355 actress Jessica Chastain reveals that she was hospitalized after a stunt gone wrong while filming an action scene. The 355 is a spy film directed by Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Dark Phoenix), who co-wrote the screenplay with Theresa Rebeck (Smash). The title refers to Agent 355, a female spy during the Revolutionary War, which is now the codename for a team of international spies played by Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, Bingbing Fan, Diane Kruger, and Lupita Nyong’o. The 355 also features Sebastian Stan and Édgar Ramírez.
In the film, Chastain plays Mason “Mace” Browne, a loose cannon CIA officer who recruits the rest of the team when she learns of a deadly weapon falling into the wrong hands. She also came up with the basic idea of the premise, pitching it to Kinberg while they filmed together on Dark Phoenix, in which she played the extraterrestrial villain Vuk. Although The 355 was largely completed pre-pandemic, its original January 14, 2021 date was delayed by over a year.
Per THR, Chastain shared a harrowing story while chatting with James Corden on The Late Late Show. During a fight scene, she accidentally fell and hit her head on a marble floor. She was “stunned” and “didn’t know what was happening.” Her stunt double rushed over to push a bruise back into her head, and she recorded a few takes because “I don’t give up easy,” but she was eventually convinced by concerned cast members to go to the hospital. Read the full quote below:
I had fallen and hit my head. I misjudged the distance. I heard a crack. No, yeah, that might be why I’m the way I am today.
Everyone stopped and like looked scared. [I] was a bit stunned. [I] didn’t know what was happening.
[My stunt double’s] so sweet. She is French and doesn’t speak a lot of English and she just comes up to me and she goes, “I’m sorry, but I have to put it back in.” And I’m sitting there and I’m like, “Put what back in? Are my brains outside of my face? What’s happening?” I guess it was just a bruise she was pushing back in my head.
[I] did a couple more takes because, you know, I don’t give up easy.
The 355 is set up with a 45-day release window, meaning the film will come to VOD in late February after its exclusive theatrical run. It’s currently suffering critically, having received just 24% on Rotten Tomatoes out of 83 reviews (though it has a slightly sunnier 29% among Top Critics). The audience seems split, giving the film a 4.5 on IMdb but a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, though across the board they’re more positive than the critical consensus.
While it’s too early for box office results on The 355 to come in, hopefully, it garners enough to be worth the pain for Jessica Chastain. Unfortunately, it’s next to impossible for it to top the weekend as Spider-Man: No Way Home continues its meteoric rise of the all-time box office charts. However, as one of only four new wide-release movies throughout the month now that Morbius has been delayed to April, it certainly has a shot at the brass ring.
