Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn remains determined to bring a modern-day take on Knight Rider to screens, with the filmmaker confirming ongoing meetings with star David Hasselhoff. While the dream project has yet to hit the gas, Gunn has revealed via Twitter that it is high up on his ever-growing to-do list, but is finding it difficult to fit the Knight Rider legacy sequel into his busy schedule.
Asked which 80s television powerhouse he would love most to bring back, Gunn did not hesitate in asserting his passion for the Knight Rider franchise, and his friendship with David Hasselhoff, the star of the original series. “My friend @DavidHasselhoff and I have discussed doing a modern continuation of Knight Rider many times,” The Suicide Squad director replied. “The primary hurdle has been there aren’t enough hours in the day to do all the cool things I want to do!”
Originally airing from 1982 to 1986 on NBC, Knight Rider starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, with our adventure beginning when our hero takes a near-fatal shot to the face. Given a new identity thanks to enhanced plastic surgery, Knight becomes the primary field agent in the pilot program of his public justice organization, the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG). Assisted by the Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT), a heavily modified, technologically advanced Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, Michael, and KITT are brought in during situations where direct action often provides the only feasible solution.
Of course, legacy sequels and resurrected 80s franchises are hot property right now. Combined with James Gunn’s evident talent and ability to make unusual, critically acclaimed, and financially successful blockbusters, there is little doubt that his vision for Knight Rider would be picked up once he has the time to commit to it. News of a Knight Rider continuation first emerged last year, with writer TJ Fixman on board to pen the script, with Gunn set to produce and develop the project. While plot details remain largely unknown, it has been described as a “present-day take that will maintain the anti-establishment tone of the original.”
David Hasselhoff himself, who fans would no doubt hope to see return to the role of Michael Knight for the sequel, has since discussed the potential legacy follow-up. Addressing his ideas, The Hoff states that the creators behind a new Knight Rider would be looking for his approval. “The details I can share are I have an emotional hand in it and I have a passion,” the actor said. “The guy who’s writing it is a major Knight Rider fan. He sent me a picture of him in the Knight Rider car. His name is T.J. Fixman. The concept, I don’t really know. I threw my hat in the ring as ‘nostalgia meets Knight Rider of today,’ which is not a new Knight Rider, but a continuation of it. They want to do a script that has my approval on it. Whether I’m in it or not, or whether I approve of it, the answer is: I don’t know.”
Until more news emerges, you can now act out your own vision for a Knight Rider continuation at home thanks to the recently released Playmobil set. James Gunn meanwhile is currently busy helming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2023, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
