James Mangold, the man behind the upcoming sequel Indiana Jones 5, has provided a promising update on the highly anticipated movie’s development, revealing that there is just a month left of filming to be completed. Taking to Twitter to answer fans’ questions, James Mangold was asked how close he is to wrapping filming on the next Indiana Jones installment, to which he replied…
The development of Indiana Jones 5 has been met with some drama along the way, with returning star and beloved Hollywood icon Harrison Ford suffering an injured shoulder during the rehearsal of a fight scene. While the crew was able to continue around this issue, losing your leading man for a time is far from ideal.
Much like many other tentpole movies, the release of the long-awaited sequel has also been through several delays and pushbacks. Initially set for July 19, 2019, Indiana Jones 5 was delayed to July 10, 2020, then July 9, 2021, before being pushed back further to July 29, 2022, due to the ongoing global circumstances. At last, on October 18, 2021, the movie was moved again to June 30, 2023, where it currently remains.
Directed by James Mangold, who will work from a script co-written by Mangold, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth, Indiana Jones 5 will act as a sequel to 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and is the fifth installment in the hugely popular, and very much cherished Indiana Jones franchise. Franchise lead Harrison Ford will return as Indiana Jones, the ruthlessly charming American archaeologist and adventurer, with the movie expected to be his final outing as the character for the 79-year-old actor. Ford will be joined by the likes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones, Antonio Banderas, and Olivier Richters.
Plot details for Indiana Jones 5 remain a closely guarded secret, and no doubt you’d need the skills of Indy to truly unearth them. Several ongoing rumors though have surfaced, and suggest that the franchise will be sent into outer space. While Indy himself may not blast into the cosmos, reports have since claimed that Indiana Jones 5 will reunite the adventurer with his old enemies the Nazis through their involvement in the 60s Space Race.
Another rumor that has recently been revealed is the idea that Indiana Jones 5 will not only act as Indy’s last hurrah but that it will set up and make way for Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character to take over as the franchise lead going forward. Mysterious insiders have gone on to claim that Kathleen Kennedy, the Hollywood producer behind the franchise, “is keen to make ‘big, bold’ changes – with few bigger than switching the lead character to a woman.” Another source has also added that, “It would be a huge statement, and a great role for Phoebe.” The idea has been met with a decidedly mixed response, but considering Ford’s age, passing the torch (and perhaps the hat and whip) onto someone else was destined to happen eventually.
Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled for release on June 30, 2023.
