Tom Holland comments on how he’s similar to Uncharted‘s Nathan Drake. Holland plays Drake in the video game adaptation, which is the first live-action iteration of the character after years of trying to bring the character to the big screen. Based on the long-running video game from Sony Playstation, Uncharted follows the adventures of Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who constantly finds himself in danger as he traverses the globe in search of long-lost riches.
Uncharted is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom) and stars Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle. Wahlberg plays Victor “Sully” Sullivan, an older treasure hunter that acts as a kind of mentor to Drake. Holland is portraying a younger version of the character, which was met with controversy early on, which appears to be a move made in order to keep the star in the Uncharted business for years to come if the film is a hit.
While talking to Screen Rant, Holland spoke about the similarities between him and Nathan Drake. Holland says he is “very adventurous,” similar to Drake, and that he likes to do things that make him feel “uncomfortable.” He says that his friends are constantly trying to get him to “calm down,” including his security guard, as he’s “always doing stupid shit.” While some of that is said in jest, Holland has typically been seen as an energetic individual with an excitable nature, making his statements align easily with his narrative. Here’s his full comment:
I mean, I think the similarity between Nate and I is I’m very adventurous. I really like doing things that make me feel uncomfortable, whether it’s scuba diving or surfing or things like that, where I feel like I’m out of my comfort zone. So yeah, it would probably be that, my sense of adventure. All of my friends are always like trying to get me to calm down a little bit. Especially Jack, my poor security guard. I’m always doing stupid shit.
Holland is coming off the massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, his sixth outing as the character. The film is currently the sixth-highest grossing film of all time, putting Holland front-and-center for audiences and making him a household name. Holland began making waves in his career with films like The Impossible and In The Heart of the Sea, before landing the gig of Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, which has launched him to superstardom. The actor is next set to appear in an untitled Fred Astaire biopic, while talks continue to see if and when he’ll suit up as Spider-Man again.
The popularity of No Way Home will no doubt be a massive help in getting audiences out to see Uncharted, capitalizing on Holland’s presence overall. The actor has been pushing interviews steadily since late last year up till now, promoting both Spider-Man: No Way Home and Uncharted, which will continue to boost the former, while pushing the latter into audience awareness. With so much hype and build-up for the long-awaited adaptation, it will be interesting to see if Uncharted proves to be worth the wait or if it suffers the disastrous fate of many video game adaptations before it.
