A trailer for the documentary GameStop: Rise of the Players shows how Redditors took on Wall Street. The fiasco involving the video game retailer occurred one year ago, in January 2021, when the investing community r/WallStreetBets noticed hedge funds shorting GameStop stock i.e., betting on it to fail. In response, Redditors flocked to purchase shares of the ailing stock, resulting in it exploding in value, causing several hedge funds to lose money with one even going bankrupt.
The GameStop stock phenomenon proved to be a real-life David vs. Goliath tale and one of the biggest news stories of the year. Soon after it occurred, it was announced that a documentary film was in works financed through Kickstarter and featuring interviews from the major players involved. GameStop: Rise of the Players is from the same filmmakers behind the Console Wars documentary, including director Jonah Tulis and producers Blake J. Harris, Dan Braun, and Josh Braun.
Now, a trailer for GameStop: Rise of the Players is here (via Super LTD), revealing a first look at how a small group of Redditors saw value in GameStop when no one else did and took on Wall Street and the powers that be. The trailer features an array of interviews with the passionate investors who managed to boost GameStop’s dwindling stock, pulling off perhaps the biggest short squeeze in history that caused hedge funds to lose millions. Other than this documentary, the GameStop stocks controversy will serve as the basis for multiple feature film adaptations. One of them is from MGM Studios and based on a book by Ben Mezrich, whose previous work inspired The Social Network. Netflix is also developing its own GameStop stocks movie with Noah Centineo on board to star and The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty writer Mark Boal penning the script. Finally, HBO has its own movie in the works from producer Jason Blum.
A few of these projects will likely end up reaching a wider audience than this documentary, though GameStop: Rise of the Players has the chance to familiarize audiences with the facts of the story and the actual players involved before it is dramatized by Hollywood. The GameStop stocks ordeal has clearly captured the interest of the public due to its David vs. Goliath-type narrative and will remain a fervent topic of discussion for the near future. GameStop: Rise of the Players premieres exclusively in theaters later this month on January 28.
