A newly revealed Eternals deleted scene sees Makkari and Sprite discuss Thanos as the final battle looms. Perhaps one of the most unique releases to come out of the MCU, Eternals arrived in theaters last fall after being delayed one year by the coronavirus pandemic. The Chloé Zhao-directed film introduced viewers to the titular cosmic team, whose ties to the MCU stretch back well before the Avengers assembled. Eternals earned mixed reviews – a first for the MCU – and $399.4 million worldwide. A heated debate has sprung up regarding whether Eternals is the worst MCU movie yet, though it should be noted it still has plenty of supporters.
One of the things that makes Eternals stand out from the rest of the franchise is its characters. As a team of 10 superpowered beings created by the Celestials, the Eternals couldn’t be more different from, say, Tony Stark or Steve Rogers. As the film revealed, the Eternals were sent to Earth thousands of years ago to protect humanity from the Deviants, an evil alien race. Each member of the team developed their own relationship to humans over the years; while some, like empathetic Sersi (Gemma Chan), chose to live among them, others like Superman-esque Ikaris (Richard Madden) held themselves apart.
That divide is at the crux of a new Eternals deleted scene, shared online by ClipMania01. Titled “Thanos,” the scene finds eternally young Sprite (Lia McHugh) reminiscing about the Eternals’ time in Babylon just as speedster Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) comes to her side. Their conversation turns to their thoughts on humanity as Sprite questions why Makkari believes humans are worthy of being saved. Makkari responds by referencing the events of Avengers: Endgame, when humans banded together to stop Thanos. It’s a sweet, understated moment between two Eternals who didn’t interact much in the finished film. Check it out below.

This conversation, while ultimately removed from the film, lays the groundwork for Eternals‘ final battle. The team is split between two factions: Ikaris and Sprite, who are focused on completing their mission and allowing humanity to perish, and the rest of the surviving team (minus Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo), who wish to save Earth. The deleted scene gives more insight into why Sprite hasn’t come to respect humans like some of her teammates have. In the finished cut of Eternals, it feels more like her decision is fueled by her love for Ikaris, but this scene confirms there’s a bit more to it.
As for Makkari, her comments echo some made earlier in Eternals. Fallen team leader Ajak (Salma Hayek) was similarly awed by the humans’ ability to fend off Thanos despite being severely outmatched. Though she sadly doesn’t make it to the final battle, it’s clear parts of her have stuck with her team. This Eternals scene could’ve subtly connected Ajak to the other characters, as well as deepened Makkari’s arc. Unfortunately, it was cut, but as Eternals makes its way to digital and home video in the coming weeks, fans can appreciate what could’ve been.
