The Eternals blooper reel gives fans a peek at Kro actor Bill Skarsgård performing without his Deviant CGI. The Marvel Cinematic Universe movie was directed by acclaimed indie filmmaker Chloé Zhao and released in November to mixed reviews from critics. After spending time exclusively in theaters, Eternals dropped on Disney+ today, January 12.
While the film’s plot was kept under wraps during promotion, hiding the more complex hero-villain relationship that emerged once the Eternals learned their true purpose, one element of pre-release intrigue was the identity of the Deviant Kro. The character gradually becomes conscious as he kills and absorbs Eternals, taking their powers in the process, until he gains the ability to speak. As it turned out, Kro didn’t end up playing the role of big-bad, but his voice was still provided by an actor of worthy villain pedigree, most famous for playing Pennywise the Clown in It.
Now, in celebration of Eternals becoming available on Disney+, ET shares a new blooper reel that includes footage of Skarsgård on set. In the short clip, the Swedish actor is wearing a nondescript costume with a performance-capture camera and small lighting rig aimed right at his face. The blooper appears to be from Kro’s cave encounter with Angelina Jolie’s Thena during the final confrontation, and the two dance around while Skarsgård seems to channel his Pennywise performance. Check out the video below:
Dancing seems to be a running thread in the blooper reel, which also includes footage from Harry Styles’ mid-credits scene cameo as Eros, the brother of Thanos. The cast and crew clearly enjoyed their time filming Eternals, which wrapped in February 2020, likely making it one of the last blockbusters to complete principal photography without incorporating pandemic-era protocols. The video also provides brief glimpses at the variety of sets constructed for the film, including the Eternals’ ship, the Domo, and a recreation of Babylon’s famous Ishtar Gate.
For many, the blooper reel might provide a bit of a shock, as Zhao’s film didn’t include a lot of wide smiles from the undying heroes. Eternals has somewhat divided the fandom, though audiences seem to be generally more appreciative than critics, whose reviews made it the lowest-rated MCU movie on Rotten Tomatoes so far. Now that the movie has made it to Disney+, where potential viewers scared off from theaters by the pandemic can finally catch up with it, there’s potential for a new consensus on its quality to form among the Marvel fandom.
