With Tom Holland’s Uncharted finally in cinemas after a long development journey, audiences will want the answer to one pressing question: does Uncharted have a post-credits scene or anything after the credits? Considering the potential for a full franchise for Sony and Tom Holland’s Nathan Drake based on Naughty Dog’s popular video game series, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Uncharted‘s ending does set up a sequel. But should Uncharted fans stay for an after-credits scene?
Uncharted’s first movie is very much an origin story for Nathan Drake and Tom Holland’s hero is not the finished article, by any means. He is, however, up for the task when Mark Wahlberg’s Sully enlists him for a globe-trotting mission that takes in the disappearance of his brother, long-lost treasures, and a cavalcade of villains. With Holland in the lead as Nathan Drake and lots of stories from the games to explore, Uncharted could be an Indiana Jones-like action franchise that spans multiple films. On the strength of the first movie, there’s very much a chance of seeing that as a reality.
Crucially, Sony clearly believes that there is a future for Uncharted sequels because Uncharted has a credits scene, as well as a stinger immediately after the main storyline ends. Both of those scenes set up a new Uncharted movie, with the mid-credits scene introducing a brand new character, played by a very familiar face. Judging by the events of Uncharted‘s credits scene, Sony will be announcing a sequel soon – or at least have the confidence in their new action franchise to set up an Uncharted sequel with new characters.
The question now is whether Uncharted will make the necessary box office money to back up Sony’s confidence. The studio will know that Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg are stars big enough to hang a franchise on, particularly as their chemistry is so much fun in Uncharted and making Holland’s Nathan Drake so young opens the possibility of a lot more to come. Quite apart from delivering on a real video game adaptation finally, Nathan Drake could become a viable option for an action movie lead to rival the likes of James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Mission Impossible‘s Ethan Hunt. And Holland would have age on his side against all three of them and an instant appeal to a younger demographic.
Given all of the potential for a movie franchise based on the video games, the fact that Uncharted has an after-credits scene shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. It’s a statement of intent from Sony and an indication that audiences can expect to see more adventures from Tom Holland’s Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg’s Sully.
