Doctor Strange meets America Chavez in a new image from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Six years after Benedict Cumberbatch starred in his first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Doctor Strange 2 will finally continue the sorcerer’s solo franchise. The movie will be quite different than originally intended, as Sam Raimi replaced Scott Derrickson as the director and a heavy emphasis on the multiverse emerged. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also had to change due to Phase 4’s reshufflings, as it originally came out before Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s multiverse story.
Audiences received their first look at Doctor Strange 2 in the post-credits of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Marvel Studios released the trailer online shortly thereafter. The marketing campaign is now starting to heat up as the sequel’s early May release date approaches. The result was Marvel Studios debuting the second Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer during the Super Bowl. It quickly surprised fans by what was shown, as the Illuminati and Patrick Stewart’s return as Professor X were teased. The footage also provided more information on Scarlet Witch’s (Elizabeth Olsen) role, while leaving plenty of mystery about what the exact plot is.
With so many characters in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the latest promotional image for the sequel puts the emphasis on America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez. Empire debuted the new photo that shows Doctor Strange and Wong (Benedict Wong) meeting America Chavez. It appears this encounter happens in a New York City alley. In addition to showing the first encounter of these characters, the Doctor Strange 2 image also provides a clear look at Wong’s new costume.
America Chavez hasn’t been shown a lot in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ marketing to this point. She’s an extremely powerful teenager from a different dimension in the comics known as the Utopian Parallel. America has the power to travel the multiverse by punching star-shaped portals into existence. The Doctor Strange 2 marketing has briefly shown glimpses of her using these powers as she and others visit different universes. Footage from the second Doctor Strange 2 trailer also teased her fighting someone and being attacked by two different multiverse monsters.
It remains to be seen exactly what role America Chavez plays in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but she should be a prominent character. It seems that she is teamed up with the MCU’s main version of Doctor Strange for most of the movie. The teases of her repeatedly encountering multiverse creatures could mean that she is the MacGuffin of the movie, as the villain might want to use her multiverse traveling powers. In any case, this first meeting between America Chavez and Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness should be quite significant.
