The latest promotional artwork for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness gives us our best look yet at the main line-up of heroes who will attempt to tackle the magical, mystical, multiversal threat at the center of the MCU sequel. Unveiled by Twitter user Doctor Strange 2 Updates, these images of “Team Strange” put the spotlight on returning characters Doctor Strange, Wong, and The Scarlet Witch, as well as introducing another look at the newest Marvel superhero Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez.
The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness superhero team will have their work cut out, with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr. Stephen Strange needing the assistance of other characters thanks to his meddling with the multiverse. Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, during which Strange unleashes the madness on the MCU, and the first season of Disney+ series Loki, which saw the God of Mischief lay waste to “the sacred timeline,” Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness further opens the door to the multiverse. This act brings forth an alternate version of Strange, whose threat to humanity is too great even for the combined forces of Strange, Wong, and Wanda Maximoff.
Standing alongside the trio of familiar faces in this promo art is a character who is set to become another Marvel mainstay, America Chavez, AKA Miss America. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will introduce young up-and-coming actress Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, who possesses superhuman strength, durability, and the power of flight, alongside the ability to open star-shaped holes in reality, allowing her and her teammates to travel through the multiverse and into other realities. Something which should come in very handy.
So far, not much has been revealed about Miss America’s role in the plot for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but Gomez has previously revealed her excitement over joining the Marvel franchise. “Well I can’t say too much – especially since Kevin [Feige] is like right there,” the actress said. “But what I can say is that I’m very excited for the movie [Doctor Strange 2] to come out, and I’m just really excited for people to see my work on screen. I mean I really put so much work into it and I’m really, really, so proud of it. And I’m just excited for it to come out. I’m just excited to be here, number one! And I’m such a fan of Marvel in general so being here is just like… I’m just shaking being here and being invited, ah!”
Directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Jade Halley Bartlett and Michael Waldron, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, and Xochitl Gomez. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 6, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
