Disney has offered a formal response to the recent controversy related to their upcoming remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Reimagining the classic animate movie in a live-action setting, the new Snow White movie came under fire by Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage during a recent interview on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast. Dinklage said it made “no sense” how Disney would be progressive to an extent by casting Rachel Zegler as Snow White while ignoring the larger problem with the titular dwarfs.
“I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. You’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me,” Dinklage said. “You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f–king backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f–k are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”
He added, “I don’t know which studio that is but they were so proud of it. All love and respect to the actress and all the people who thought they were doing the right thing. But I’m just like, what are you doing?”
It wasn’t too long before these comments were trending throughout social media. The situation has now been formally addressed by Disney with a statement acknowledging the criticism. While the company cannot offer specific details as to what will be different this time around, Disney does clearly state that they will be taking steps to avoid “reinforcing stereotypes” featured in the original animated movie with the guidance of “members of the dwarfism community.”
“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community,” a Disney spokesperson said, per Variety. “We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”
Rachel Zegler Stars as the Titular Disney Princess in the Snow White Remake
West Side Story star Rachel Zegler takes on the role of Snow White in the new live-action remake. Tony Award winner Andrew Burnap also joined the series in a mystery role following the announcement that Wonder Woman and Red Notice star Gal Gadot would co-star as the Evil Queen. There is a lot of mystery that still surrounds the project, and it’s not clear how Disney will portray Dopey and his six pals in the new film. As Disney has suggested, however, more details will be revealed as the film nears a production start.
Marc Webb directs the live-action snow White film. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote the screenplay and Marc Platt is producing. The Snow White remake will begin production sometime this spring in the U.K., according to reports. A release date hasn’t been officially set at this time.
