After trying so hard to deny his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Andrew Garfield is finally free to open up about his “secret” appearance in Marvel Studios’ Spidey threequel. In his limited screentime, Garfield managed to win hearts with his endearing and adorable appeal as he sunk deep into both his character’s joy and grief in the film. From the moment he jumps through the portal to his final conversation with his multiversal brothers, Garfield shined to the extent that fans are raging outcries to revive The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
And in those ‘amazing’ scenes featuring Andrew Garfield, a particular one that had the audience adore that multiversal relationship between the three Spider-Men was an improvisation from the actor.
While talking to Variety, Garfield revealed how he improvised the “I Love You Guys” line in the movie when the three Peter(s) are swinging webs to fight off the villains from across the Spiderverse. He said:
“There’s a line I improvised in the movie, looking at [Maguire and Holland] and I tell them I love them; That was just me loving them”
The scene comes right before the three Spider-Man, that is Holland’s MCU Spider-Man, Maguire’s Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man hug each other and make a collaborative swing to the top of the newly modified Statue of Liberty. Just as the three heroes devise a plan to take one target at a time, Andrew’s Peter #3 takes a moment to hold his ‘brothers’ and tell them, “I love you guys.” The other two Spideys look a bit confused hearing this, probably because the line was never on the script. Andrew just went on to express his enthusiasm and love for the fan-favorite character and tell his co-actors how much he loves being with them on the film in his own way.
The Tick, Tick… Boom! actor has always been really excited about the character’s live-action iterations, whether it’s Tobey Maguire or his successor Tom Holland. Garfield has openly expressed how Spider-Man has always been an inspiration to him and has never failed to express his appreciation for Holland, who took over the role after The Amazing Spider-Man series was sacked and the character was merged into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And that excitement was very well visible in his appearance in No Way Home. His character’s excitement of realizing the existence of multi-dimensional realities reflects Garfield’s own love for the character, something he decided to openly express on camera to his co-stars who have shared the role of Spider-Man in live-action with him in the past two decades.
There were several moments when we got callbacks to Andrew’s The Amazing Spider-Man films, including labeling Garfield as the “Amazing” one out of the three. With this positive response towards his role, fans are demanding Sony to revive The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and bring Garfield back for other Spider-Man projects. Garfield himself has agreed to return to the franchise if anything of interest comes his way. Though there are no immediate plans to revive the franchise, let’s see if Sony takes this demand from fans into serious consideration anytime soon.
Currently, Andrew Garfield is receiving praise for his role as Jonathan Larson in the biopic Tick, Tick… Boom! and has also wrapped filming for the upcoming miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven. Garfield has also been nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the Best Actor- Musical or Comedy category for the former.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to lead the box office and is dominating theaters worldwide.
