Andrew Garfield wore the same suit worn in The Amazing Spider-Man for his return to the role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The latest installment of the MCU’s Spider-Man movies pulls some familiar faces across the multiverse after a spell goes wrong, forcing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to fix it. Included in this list of characters dragged from their dimensions are two alternate Peter Parkers: Garfield and Tobey Maguire.
Garfield played Peter Parker from 2012-2014 and was rumored to be in the newest film before its release. However, even as multiverse storyline details were announced and leaks from the production became public, Garfield ardently denied having any kind of involvement. Despite the leaks, fans were ecstatic to see Maguire, Garfield, and Holland appear together on the big screen. Their sibling-like dynamic has helped to make Spider-Man: No Way Home a massive success and still has fans raving about the movie over a month after its initial release.
Recently, Garfield was a guest on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and talked all things Spider-Man: No Way Home. Each adaptation of Spider-Man has had its own version of the Spidey Suit, fitted to the actor. Surprisingly, Garfield reveals in the episode that when he reprised his character in No Way Home, he used the exact same suit as he did in The Amazing Spider-Man.
I still fit bruh… I had to get in shape. I had to work on it with my trainer. I was very nervous about that. I was very nervous. I was like… no one wants to see an old, fat guy in a Spider-Man costume.
Holland has complained about some uncomfortable side effects of his suit. Being unable to eat properly and having the persistent fear of drowning in his own suit is amongst a few of his issues. On set, Holland was jealous of the zippers sewn into Garfield’s Spider-Man suit as Holland’s version made it impossible for his hands to be free of fabric, making everyday tasks (like using his phone) more difficult. While understandably frustrating for Holland, this gave fans an interesting insight into the small differences between the alternate versions of Peter Parker.
Since the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Garfield has spoken publicly about how he enjoyed the experience. He appears to have been deeply committed to the character, and to giving fans the same Amazing Spider-Man look that they remember from the films. Garfield said that the awkward-yet-heartfelt “I love you guys” his character says to his alternate selves was more for his co-stars than the characters, so it comes as no surprise that he is eager to keep working with Holland and Maguire. While the character still has an unclear future within the MCU, fans share in Garfield’s enthusiasm and have plenty of support for all these versions of Spider-Man.
