While Andrew Garfield is winning awards for his performance in Tick, Tick…Boom!, he should be getting recognition for his best performance yet, which was convincing the world that he wasn’t in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Most people didn’t know, and Garfield has finally revealed the only people who knew before the film’s release.
Most people saw through his lies, as rumors, leaks, and fan theories made his and Tobey Maguire’s appearance the worst kept secret in Hollywood. Still, no one knew for sure, and Garfield would deny his role in No Way Home at any chance he could. In a recent appearance on Ellen, Garfield revealed the only people who knew he was in the movie.
“My dad, my brother, and my mother at the time,” Garfield told Ellen. “Yeah, just kind of us.”
Garfield also mentioned that he really enjoyed lying to everyone. He compared it to when you’re planning a surprise birthday party for someone. You have to lie to them because the surprise reveal would be absolutely worth it, and he knew fans wanted to enjoy the surprise.
“I lied to people for a good two years and I lied to the internet for two years, and it felt great,” he stated. “It was fun to keep it a secret. It felt like I was part of organizing a surprise birthday party for a bunch of people who I knew would appreciate it.”
Even Emma Stone Had No Idea Garfield Was in No Way Home
So, besides his agent, and the people involved with No Way Home, nobody else knew about Garfield’s return as Spider-Man. In fact, it was recently revealed that former Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone didn’t even know about it either. Stone starred as Gwen Stacy in both The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Speaking with Jos Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Garfield revealed that he kept lying to Stone about his role, despite her adamantly trying to find out.
“Emma kept on texting me and she was like, ‘Are you in this new Spider-Man film?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about!’ She was like, ‘Shut up, just tell me.’ And like, I honestly… I kept it going, even with her, it’s hilarious. And then she saw it and she was like, ‘You’re a jerk!’.
Based on viral videos showing theater reactions to Garfield’s return, his decision to keep this role quiet turned out to be the right one. It’s honestly impressive how much Garfield duped some people into thinking he wasn’t in it.
